Make ‘business connections’ with Virgin America’s new in-flight social network ;)

[~Time Published February 12, 2014 at 06:28PM]

Haven’t had much luck buying alluring strangers a drink on your last few Virgin America flights? What you need, my friend, is a service to expand your circle of potential prospects and make the in-flight connection you deserve. At least that’s what the airline must be thinking with its announcement of the “first-ever” in-flight social network, developed with Gogo Wifi and the Here on Biz geo-location app.

Once you’ve downloaded Here on Biz from the App Store (sorry, no Android types need apply) and connect through Gogo, the service lets you register via Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter to contact fellow travelers at the gate, on your plane and even on other Virgin America flights. But don’t think the social network is all about helping you get lucky at 35,000 feet (the sexy skies are the furthest thing from Richard Branson’s mind, after all); Virgin America says the service is targeted at business travelers who want to “take advantage of downtime in-flight to build or renew their professional connections.” It’s unclear, though, whether Virgin will claim rights to any startup ideas hatched on board.

Activision's mobile installment of the Call of Duty series, Call of Duty: Strike Team , is now available for Android devices on Google Play for $6.99, One of Swords announced.

An iOS version of the game, which was built specifically for mobile devices, launched last month for the same price. The game allows players to switch between a traditional first-person shooter view and a top-down strategic view so they can alternate between directing their squad and controlling individual soldiers. Strike Team features a single-player campaign mode and a survival mode, and players will lead a U.S. Joint Special Operations Team to save the country after it gets involved in a war with an unknown enemy.

The iOS version is available for the iPhone 4S...

Don't like how iOS 7 only shows first names in the Messages and Mail apps? Here's how to fix it!

If you’ve upgraded your iPhone or iPad to iOS 7, you’ve probably already noticed that the Messages and Mail apps both default to only showing the first name of a contact in a conversation thread. For those of us that have more than one John in our contacts, it can get pretty confusing. Fortunately, there’s a way to turn last names back on by default.

Here’s how:

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad running iOS 7.

  2. Scroll down and tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

  3. Under the Contacts section, tap on Short Name.

  4. Turn the Short Name option to Off.

That’s all there is to it. Your Messages and Mail apps should now show last names again if you’ve got them listed as such in your contacts. Any other native apps that use name shortening will also stop doing so.

Fooling Touch ID is anything but trivial, says security boffin

Fooling Touch ID is anything but trivial, says security boffin

German hacker collective the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) grabbed headlines after showing a method to fool the iPhone 5s’s Touch ID fingerprint scanner, but it’s nothing that ordinary people need to worry about too much, according to a security expert.

CCC hacker Starbug created a fake fingerprint by scanning a real one, printing it and ultimately creating a fake print by transferring it to latex rubber or wood glue. The group claims that this is proof that biometric security isn’t effective and shouldn’t be used. Starbug calls his method “very straightforward and trivial.”

Security expert Marc Rogers – director of security operations at the DEF CON hacking conference and principal security researcher for mobile security software developer Lookout – posted an entry to the Lookout blog entitled Why I Hacked Apple’s TouchID, And Still Think It Is Awesome. Rogers explains:

Hacking TouchID relies upon a combination of skills, existing academic research and the patience of a Crime Scene Technician.

He talks about some of the issues involved in acquiring an unsmudged print and transferring it. Contrary to Starbug’s claims of triviality, Rogers says:

It is a lengthy process that takes several hours and uses over a thousand dollars worth of equipment including a high resolution camera and laser printer.

Rogers underscores that Touch ID is useful as a convenience factor, not as an improved method of security.

Today just over 50 percent of users have a PIN on their smartphones at all, and the number one reason people give for not using the PIN is that it’s inconvenient. TouchID is strong enough to protect users from casual or opportunistic attackers (with one concern I will cover later on) and it is substantially better than nothing.

Rogers also says that Touch ID would be improved if it were a two-factor authentication system – something you have (in this case, your fingerprint) and something you know – a PIN number or passcode. You can’t install Touch ID without putting a passcode on your iPhone 5s as well, so the parts are there, if Apple’s willing and able.

Over the years a number of studies have been done on smartphone security. And while the number of smartphones in use, and the variety of operating systems in use has increased, the number of users who protect their devices with a lock code or passcode has stayed within a few digits of 50 percent.

As Rogers points out, the number one reason why smartphone users don’t use a passcode is because they’re inconvenient. Touch ID handily addresses the convenience problem. While biometric security isn’t perfect, no security is perfect.

If Touch ID’s lasting contribution will be to provide that other 50 percent with a viable method of locking and unlocking their phone, Apple will have made a really positive contribution to the smartphone market.

What do you think? Is Rogers understating the risk to Touch ID users? Has Chaos Computer Club overstated how easy Touch ID is to override? I want to hear from you, so share your thoughts in the comments.

CCC: wij kraakten iPhone 5s

[Author: ]

How to enable grid lines in the iOS 7 Camera app

Enabling grid lines in the default Camera app can help make sure your photo is not only straight, but that you’re using the rule of thirds in order to capture the most interesting photo you can. In iOS 7, the way you turn grid lines on and off in the Camera app has changed slightly. If you’re fumbling around trying to figure out how to turn them on, follow along and we’ll help.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Scroll down and tap on Photos & Camera.

  3. Again scroll down towards the bottom of the page and under the Camera section, there is an option for Grid. Turn the feature On by tapping on the slider.

That’s all there is to it. Grid lines should now be activated inside the native Camera app.

A live demonstration of Square Enix's upcoming free-to-play smartphone title, Final Fantasy Agito, offers a look at travel, battles and general gameplay.

The demo, which you can watch above, was presented at Tokyo Game Show 2013. Agito takes place in the same world as Final Fantasy Type-0, a title released for PSP in Japan two years ago. The upcoming game is a retelling of Type-0 from the point of player-customized characters.

Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Agito earlier this month for iOS and Android. According to game director Hajime Tabata, Agito will "definitely be localized" for Western players.

Touch ID fooled – not hacked – by a lifted fingerprint

[Author: ]

[Time Published September 23, 2013 at 02:58AM]

The Chaos Computer Club – a Germany-based group of computer hackers – claims to have fooled Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint technology, which makes its debut on the new iPhone 5s. While a YouTube video demonstrating the trick is entitled “hacking iphone 5S touchID” (and is being reported by some organizations similarly) it is in point of fact not a hack. But we’ll get to that in a moment.

In a blog post describing the procedure, Chaos Computer Club says:

A fingerprint of the phone user, photographed from a glass surface, was enough to create a fake finger that could unlock an iPhone 5s secured with TouchID. This demonstrates – again – that fingerprint biometrics is unsuitable as access control method and should be avoided.

The one minute video shows someone using their index finger to register Touch ID on a newly set-up iPhone 5s. Once the setup has been completed, they then apply a tape to their middle finger which, presumably, contains a transfer of the index fingerprint. That unlocks the phone.

The Chaos Computer Club explains how the process to produce the fingerprint was made. It involves photographing a fingerprint at 2400 dot per inch resolution.

The resulting image is then cleaned up, inverted and laser printed with 1200 dpi onto transparent sheet with a thick toner setting. Finally, pink latex milk or white woodglue is smeared into the pattern created by the toner onto the transparent sheet. After it cures, the thin latex sheet is lifted from the sheet, breathed on to make it a tiny bit moist and then placed onto the sensor to unlock the phone. This process has been used with minor refinements and variations against the vast majority of fingerprint sensors on the market.

So this isn’t a procedure that someone is likely to casually reproduce just for the sake of unlocking your phone. But Chaos Computer Club spokesman Frank Rieger says biometric security like Touch ID has more nefarious implications.

Biometrics is fundamentally a technology designed for oppression and control, not for securing everyday device access.

To its credit, Chaos Computer Club isn’t calling the spoof a hack, but that isn’t stopping it from being widely misreported, thanks in part to the sloppy title on the YouTube video. But what is the point of accuracy when there are page views to be had?

Google invites iOS users to experience data compression with Chrome

Like it or not, thinking about every megabyte is essential for smartphone owners hoping to keep their monthly usage from topping whatever tier they’ve purchased. The nasty, unbecoming world of data caps isn’t changing in the near-term, and Google knows it. Following in the footsteps of Opera, the outfit’s Chrome browser for iOS is evidently equipped with a data compression feature that’s engineered to save precious bytes when browsing via mobile. This technology has existed for some time, but it’s just now being rolled out en masse to those with an iPhone. We’re told that it “compresses and minimizes HTML, JavaScript and CSS resources, removing unnecessary whitespace, comments and other metadata not essential to rendering the pages,” which can reduce data usage by up to 50 percent on certain sites. So, Apple — thinking about tossing something similar under the hood of Mobile Safari?
