ASUS user manual confirms VivoTab Note 8 Windows tablet

[~Time Published January 03, 2014 at 02:43AM]

ASUS has just verified that a VivoTab Note 8 slate is imminent after it published the manual on its own site. According to leaks we saw earlier at the FCC and elsewhere, the Windows 8.1 device will be powered by an Intel Atom Z3740 quad-core CPU and have 2GB of RAM, up to 64GB of storage, a 1,280 x 800 touchscreen (which may include Wacom digitizer support), a dedicated stylus, front and rear cameras and a microSD slot. Though the reported specs and $300 price position it closely to the Dell Venue 8 Pro, the VivoTab seems to include the pen, unlike its competitor. All that’s left now is a formal launch with availability and final pricing, which is probably set for a certain little Vegas show.

North Korea's new tablet is surprisingly good

North Korea is best known for its crushingly oppressive government and comically inept space program — but new reports suggest that the country may be producing a surprisingly respectable touchscreen tablet. A state-produced device called the Samjiyon has been making the rounds at Asian trade shows all year, attracting the attention of both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal . The hardware isn't as bad as you might think, handling common apps like Angry Birds with noticeable but not uncommon levels of lag. Mostly, it works.

Stephen Elop looks forward to driving change at Microsoft 'in whatever capacity'

All eyes are on Stephen Elop. Just hours ago, he introduced Nokia’s first Windows tablet; he’s also overseeing his division’s integration into Microsoft; and Redmond is even considering him as its next CEO. During our interview today, Elop understandably couldn’t comment on the prospect of taking Steve Ballmer’s place, but he did say he’s ready to take up the challenge of bringing the two giants together, no matter what.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of driving that change within the company in whatever capacity,” Elop said.

Surface 2: a closer look at Microsoft's more refined tablet

[Author: ]

[Time Published September 23, 2013 at 06:04PM]

Microsoft's new Surface 2 tablet is now official, and it marks more of a refinement over the original than a radical rethinking of the basic Surface concept. The updated model includes Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor, a 1080p display, and a new two-stage kickstand. I got a chance to briefly try out the new tablet, and the first thing I noticed was the weight. Microsoft hasn't trimmed down the Surface 2, but it feels considerably lighter than the original. You'll obviously notice that improvement when you use the Surface 2 in tablet mode, but in the laptop mode the main addition is a two-stage kickstand.

The Surface 2 kickstand answers some of the criticisms of the Surface RT. However, instead of being fully adjustable with separate angles,...

HP SlateBook x2 review: HP takes on ASUS with a dockable Android tablet

HP SlateBook x2 review: HP takes on ASUS with a dockable Android tablet

Until now, ASUS hasn’t had much competition in dockable Android tablets. Sure, we’ve seen the odd model from Lenovo and other companies, but for the most part, “Transformer” has become one of those words like “Kleenex” — you know, the kind that refers just as much to a category as a specific brand. Nonetheless, HP is throwing its hat in the ring. The SlateBook x2, only the company’s second Android tablet, is a 10-inch slate that competes on price as much as performance. For $480, the keyboard dock comes included, and the tablet itself boasts some top-notch specs, including a 1,920 x 1,080 screen and a Tegra 4 processor. And, of course, in addition to being a keyboard, that dock has a built-in battery of its own, promising to extend the total runtime to up to 12.5 hours. So is it good enough that you’ll remember not to call it a Transformer?%Gallery-slideshow88713%

How tablets are changing the classroom

[Author: ]

[Time Published September 15, 2013 at 02:44PM]

As part of their education issue, The New York Times Magazine takes a long look at the rise of tablet tech in education, including News Corp's Amplify project. The programs look to improve education by producing more lessons that adapt to an individual student's pace and style of learning, also taking advantage of children's general enthusiasm for gadgetry. It's a thriving market, given the $17 billion that K-12 schools spend on instructional materials and technology each year — but there's also reason to be skeptical. Many in the article worry about the effect so much screen time will have on children, and how teachers will adapt to the new digital classroom. "The used to have too little data from students," one analyst says, "and now...
