RIAA and BPI Use “Pirated” Code on Their Websites

deleteCopyright is a double-edged sword, and those who sharpen one side often get cut by the other.

Two weeks ago we reported that the new Healthcare.gov website had stripped the copyright notice from one of the scripts it used. This blatant act of ‘piracy’ prompted us to take a closer look at the websites of several anti-piracy organizations, and today we present our findings.

As it turns out the U.S. Government is not the only one violating copyright licenses. The websites of music industry groups RIAA and BPI also use infringing code.

On both sites we found open source JQuerys scripts that are released under the MIT license. This license permits any person or organization to use, copy, modify, merge, distribute, or even sell copies of the software. There’s only one condition users have to agree to; that the original copyright notice stays intact.

Ironically, the scripts used on the RIAA and BPI websites have the copyright licenses removed.

BPI uses the depreciated template script jQuery.tmpl.min.js, and as can be seen below, yesterday there was no reference to the MIT license or the copyright holder listed at the top of the file.

BPI violation

The image below shows what the 2011 copy of the script should look like, with the proper copyright credits and applicable licenses included.

Proper credits

The RIAA makes a similar mistake with the image slider plugin jquery.orbit.min.js. This software is copyrighted by the design firm ZURB but the version in use at the RIAA website yesterday fails to mention this, or the MIT license.

Here is what a copy of ZURB’s plugin should look like when the copyright holder and MIT license are properly mentioned.

TorrentFreak asked both RIAA and BPI for a comment yesterday. RIAA said it was looking into the issue and appears to have added the copyright notice now. BPI has not responded to our question but clearly received our email as they also updated the file with proper credits.

These type of violations are not unique, and can be found in many websites all over the Internet. Still, from outfits whose raison d’ĂȘtre is protecting copyrights, we have to expect that these issues are carefully checked.

The violations were probably caused by the web developers who coded the RIAA and BPI sites. We doubt that any of the higher ranked executives know about it, but next time they may want to instruct their coders to keep their site free from copyright infringements.

This is not the first time that an anti-piracy group has been accused of pirating software. A few years ago the MPAA removed the linkware license form Patrick Robin’s Forest Blog software. The movie industry group later said that this was a mistake, and it was only used for testing purposes.

Instant Update: A final check upon publication revealed that RIAA and BPI both fixed the infringements, probably more swiftly than the average website processes DMCA requests. Neither group provided a comment on the copyright violations.

YouTube Live: a disastrous spectacle Google would like you to forget

This Sunday, November 3rd, the world will experience the first annual YouTube Music Awards, hosted by Jason Schwartzman and streamed live from New York City. Featuring huge music acts like Lady Gaga, Eminem, and the Arcade Fire, the event seems poised to take on MTV’s long-standing VMAs, with a few internet-focused (“best fan-made response video!”) awards thrown in the mix. But YouTube’s first foray into a massive, live-streamed event mixing traditional stars with people “from the internet” wasn’t a shining success at all. 2008’s YouTube Live was, by most accounts, a somewhat infamous failure that was quietly swept under the rug.

If you were to have visited YouTube on November 22nd, 2008, you likely would have been...

Twitter 'strongly considering' shutting down #Music just six months after launch, says report

Twitter #Music may not be much longer for this world. All Things D's Mike Isaac reports that multiple sources say the company is "strongly considering" shutting down the music discovery service, which has seen little public interest. Those sources didn't reveal how long #Music could last, but the report says that the service's fate "is nearly sealed."

The service first went live in April after a number of rumors that sparked a noticeable amount of hype. Activity on the site spiked in the early days, but since then the service has been largely forgotten. The sources tell All Things D that since launch downloads and engagement has been "abysmal." #Music is based around using data the social network has on you — like who you follow —...

Don't like how iOS 7 only shows first names in the Messages and Mail apps? Here's how to fix it!

If you’ve upgraded your iPhone or iPad to iOS 7, you’ve probably already noticed that the Messages and Mail apps both default to only showing the first name of a contact in a conversation thread. For those of us that have more than one John in our contacts, it can get pretty confusing. Fortunately, there’s a way to turn last names back on by default.

Here’s how:

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad running iOS 7.

  2. Scroll down and tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

  3. Under the Contacts section, tap on Short Name.

  4. Turn the Short Name option to Off.

That’s all there is to it. Your Messages and Mail apps should now show last names again if you’ve got them listed as such in your contacts. Any other native apps that use name shortening will also stop doing so.

Martha Stewart breaks iPad, is disappointed that Apple fails to kiss her butt

Media mogul/domestic goddess/convicted felon Martha Stewart recently dropped her iPad, breaking the screen. For a stinking peasant like you or me, that would have necessitated a trip to the Apple Store or somewhere else to have it fixed or replaced preferably with AppleCare +. Now Ms. Stewart certainly could have sent one of her minions to take care of it, but that wasn’t good enough – she expected on site service from Apple, then took to Twitter to complain when it didn’t happen.

“I just dropped my iPad on the ground and shattered two glass corners. What to do?does one call Apple to come and pick it up or do I take it?” she tweeted on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Stewart added, “I am still waiting for an apple rep to come pick up my IPad. No action yey (sic)”

Brainstorming, Stewart decided that she had a brilliant entrepreneurial idea in the form of a same day delivery exchange through Amazon.com.

But by late Thursday, Stewart realized that she – and her overblown sense of celebrity entitlement – had gotten the better of her when she said, “So is it time to put out the fires and admit I was just pissed off at the fact my precious ipad shattered and I wanted to make light of it?”

By then, unfortunately, Stewart had set off alarms in Cupertino, because apparently someone at Apple’s PR team got a hold of Stewart’s people, and asked her to tone it down. That didn’t set well with the queen of JCPenney home decor.

“i cannot believe that Apple Public Relations is mad at me for tweeting about my Ipad and how to get it fixed! steve jobs gave it to me!” she tweeted.

No, the “steve jobs gave it to me!” comment doesn’t make you sound haughty at all, Martha.

She followed that up late last night with some comments about her frustration, then resumed this morning with a statement that the iPad’s “Glass should /could be unbreakable.”

I’m sure the Gorilla Glass boffins at Corning are gonna get right on that, Your Highness.
