De Noord-Koreaanse leider Kim Jong-un heeft voor het eerst gesproken over de executie van zijn oom. Hij deed dat in zijn nieuwjaarstoespraak voor de staatstelevisie.

During December, all self-respecting search engines produce an overview of the most popular search terms of the past year.

These lists give insight into recent trends, and in 2013 Nelson Mandela, Paul Walker and iPhone 5s were the top trending searches on Google.

But what about torrent search engines? With billions of searches every year it’s worth taking a look at the most-entered keywords on the dominant file-sharing network.

There is no central database of searches available, but Kickass.to, one of the top three torrent sites in terms of visitors, was kind enough to share the most popular search terms of 2013 with us. This list is based on millions of searches and gives an indication of what people were looking for on BitTorrent networks during the last 12 months.

Topping the lists this year is YIFY, which refers to the popular movie release group. The group has millions of dedicated followers who use the ‘YIFY’ tag to find its recent releases. The movies World War Z and Iron Man 3 complete the top three.

The top 10 contains three other movie title related searches: Man of Steel, Star Trek Into Darkness and Now You See Me. The search term 2013, often used to find recent movies, is listed in sixth place.

Traditionally, TV-shows are much sought after on BitTorrent as well, and it’s no different this year. Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Dexter made it into the top 10, followed by The Walking Dead and Suits further down the list.

Adult related searches are surprisingly absent among the popular search terms, and the same is true for music and game searches. The only non-video search in the top 50 is Windows 8 in 40th place.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that ITA, a term used to find Italian content and the most searched for keyword in 2011, dropped out of the top 50 entirely. This can be explained by the fact that KickassTorrent was blocked by all Italian Internet providers last year.

Below is the full list of the 50 most-entered search phrases on Kickass.to (minus site specific searches). This list will be different for each torrent site, but we assume that the top searches will be popular on other indexes as well.

Here’s a Wikipedia stat you probably didn’t know: around 80 percent of new contributions to the crowdsourced encyclopedia are abandoned before they’re submitted. The organization thinks a lot of writers get cold feet because, since its creation, Wikipedia has deliberately prevented them from being able to save their articles without publishing them: you either went public or you went home. That’s changing now, as the site has decided to implement a Draft mode that allows work to be saved while still remaining invisible to most search queries. The site’s designers acknowledge that the feature is pretty basic right now, but they promise it’ll be refined over time to allow for collaboration on articles that are still in the draft state. Mensen die allergisch zijn, kunnen nu al last krijgen van hooikoorts. Het is deze maand warmer dan normaal. Daardoor komen nu de eerste bomen al in bloei die de pollen verspreiden waarvan hooikoortspatiënten last hebben.

De gemiddelde temperatuur lag in december meer dan twee graden boven het langjarig gemiddelde, meldt het KNMI. Het was gemiddeld 5,8 graden. December 2013 komt daarmee op de zesde plaats van warmste decembermaanden sinds 1901.

Uitheemse elzen en hazelaars

Door de hoge temperatuur komen de eerste hazelaars al in bloei en een aantal uitheemse elzen. De inheemse witte en zwarte els bloeien nog niet, maar wel soorten als de Kaukasische els en een kruising van die els met de Japanse. Deze soorten komen normaal gesproken half januari in bloei, maar de eerste bloeiden nu al vlak voor kerst.

Er zijn nu nog niet veel pollen in de lucht, maar de concentratie elzenpollen kan de komende tijd oplopen. Overigens bloeien de uitheemse elzen maar een paar dagen en zijn de pollen door westenwind en regen naar verwachting snel verdwenen.

Ook de hazelaars bloeien vroeger dan anders. Afgelopen jaar waren ze ook al vroeg en lag de piek in de bloei op 6 januari. Nu komt die piek mogelijk nog eerder.
