Update to Windows 8.1 coming this spring with more hardware options, benefits for non-touch users

[~Time Published February 23, 2014 at 11:29PM]

We may be at a mobile show this week, but Microsoft is making some announcements on the Windows side. VP Joe Belfiore, at an event this afternoon, has announced that an update is coming to Windows 8.1 this Spring, which will offer more hardware options, benefits for non-touch users and some changes to the user interface. It brings support to devices at lower price points that have as little as 1GB of RAM and 16GB storage, enables app launching and switching via the taskbar and a new mouse user interface with new options for closing apps and right-clicking to get to the Start screen.

Despite the update’s attention on users of non-touch devices, Belfiore exclaimed: “we love touch, but we do want to make things better for people who don’t have touchscreens.” We’ll update the post as we hear more about this new update.

Microsoft rebrands Office Web Apps as Office Online because it’s an online version of Office

[~Time Published February 20, 2014 at 03:46PM]

Use Office Web Apps much? Us neither, which is probably why Microsoft’s answer to Google Docs felt it needed a makeover. Following SkyDrive’s recent rebrand to OneDrive, Office Web Apps has received similar treatment, and now asks you to call it Office Online. Microsoft hopes this new title more accurately reflects what Web Apps was/is: an online version of Word, Powerpoint, Excel and others, free to SkyDrive OneDrive users. Furthermore, Office Online is now located at the convenient URL of Office.com, which should prompt a few more people to stumble across it and add it to their bookmarks. Otherwise, it’s the same Office-in-a-browser experience with real-time co-editing features, just with a heap of new document templates and a dropdown toolbar for selecting different apps on the fly. Now, go get your spreadsheet on — we need those TPS reports by lunch.

Security Essentials for Windows XP will die when the OS does

[~Time Published January 09, 2014 at 01:31AM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

There are three months to go for Windows XP. The ancient operating system is leaving extended support on April 8, at which point Microsoft will no longer ship free security fixes. XP itself isn't the only thing that's losing support on that date. The Windows XP version of Microsoft Security Essentials, the company's anti-malware app, will stop receiving signature updates on that date and will also be removed for download.

The message is clear: after April 8, Windows XP will be insecure, and Redmond isn't going to provide even a partial remedy for the security issues that will arise. Anti-virus software is just papering over the cracks if the operating system itself isn't getting fixed.

In contrast, both Google and Mozilla will provide updates for Chrome and Firefox beyond the cessation of Microsoft's support. Google has committed to supporting Chrome until April 2015.

Dec. 2013 Steam hardware survey shows Windows 8.1 adoption jump

[~Time Published January 04, 2014 at 01:31AM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

Adoption of Windows 8.1 saw a notable jump among Steam users during December 2013, according to Valve's most recent monthly hardware survey.

The 64-bit version of Windows 7 remains the operating system that the majority of Steam users run, although just barely: The proportion dropped by 1 percentage point to 50.76 percent. The decrease in Windows 7 and 8 usage can likely be attributed to Windows users upgrading to Windows 8.1 — 8.53 percent of Steam users are now running the 64-bit version of Microsoft's latest operating system, a 2.42 percent increase over the November numbers. Microsoft released Windows 8.1 as a free download at the end of October.

Meanwhile, Linux usage was back up in December to 1.07 percent after a drop during...

Why Microsoft didn't ditch the Xbox One's disc drive

[Time Published January 02, 2014 at 08:47PM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

Microsoft considered creating a version of the Xbox One without a disc drive, head of Microsoft Studios Phil Spencer told the Official Xbox Magazine U.K.

Microsoft was still discussing the alternate version of the next-gen console as recently as mid-2013.

"Obviously, after the announcement and E3, there was some feedback about what people wanted to change," Spencer said. "There was a real discussion about whether we should have an optical disc drive in Xbox One or if we could get away with a purely disc-less console, but when you start looking at bandwidth and game size, it does create issues."

The Xbox One, like Sony's next-gen console, the PlayStation 4, allows users to download full retail games through its online store. The size...

Xbox One tops console purchases for select retailers on Black Friday

[Author: ]

[Time Published December 02, 2013 at 01:39AM]

Microsoft's Xbox One was the most commonly purchased console from retailers Target and Walmart on Black Friday, according to a survey from Infoscout.

Xbox One accounted for 31 percent of consoles purchased, while the PlayStation 4 made up approximately 15 percent. The Xbox 360 ranked second with 30 percent, while the PlayStation 3 accounted for another 15 percent. The Wii U came in fifth with six percent, while the Wii made up a mere one percent of purchases.

The survey does not include the number of consoles purchased, or how many customers were surveyed. The success of both Xbox consoles can be "largely attributed" to limited availability of the PS4, Infoscout said. Discounts on the Xbox 360 at Walmart also likely helped boost...

A sometimes true, sometimes false history of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4

Our first glimpses of those consoles, under their code names Durango and Orbis, used by developers to secretly talk about the Xbox One and PS4, respectively, came in early 2012.

At the time, the most basic details were being reported by Kotaku; the next Xbox would include a Blu-ray optical drive, a higher fidelity Kinect sensor and might not play used games. Those details were all accurate when Microsoft announced the Xbox One more than a year later, though the company famously reversed course on restricting used games.

(Truthfully, one of the first indicators of a new Xbox was the inclusion of an "Xbox 720" logo cameo in the movie Real Steel . But since robot boxing is not yet a major spectator sport, the timing of the console's...

Windows 8.1′s web use doubles shortly after launch

[Author: ]

Windows 81 web use doubles in October, steals share from its ancestor

Web traffic doesn’t directly translate to market share, but it’s handy for tracking the adoption of brand new operating systems — take Windows 8.1, for example. Net Applications notes that Microsoft’s new OS nearly doubled in web share upon its official launch in October, climbing to 1.7 percent. Clearly, a lot of web surfers had been waiting to upgrade. As you might imagine, though, the software took share from its predecessor as customers either replaced PCs or downloaded the free update. Windows 8 declined for the first time ever, falling half a point to 7.5 percent; the two 8.x revisions gained 0.4 points when put together, but Windows as a whole dipped slightly to 90.7 percent.

Redmond wasn’t the only one releasing a new platform, of course. Apple’s OS X Mavericks accounted for more than 0.8 percent of web traffic last month, or enough to put it past Tiger and Leopard almost overnight. While the overall Mac platform only grew by a tiny amount to hit 7.7 percent of web use, we doubt that the crew at 1 Infinite Loop is complaining. It’s not clear how the dueling Apple and Microsoft upgrades will compare in the long run, but you can check the historical trends both after the break and at the source link.

Stephen Elop looks forward to driving change at Microsoft 'in whatever capacity'

All eyes are on Stephen Elop. Just hours ago, he introduced Nokia’s first Windows tablet; he’s also overseeing his division’s integration into Microsoft; and Redmond is even considering him as its next CEO. During our interview today, Elop understandably couldn’t comment on the prospect of taking Steve Ballmer’s place, but he did say he’s ready to take up the challenge of bringing the two giants together, no matter what.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of driving that change within the company in whatever capacity,” Elop said.

Microsoft will soon let you install Windows 8 apps on up to 81 devices

[Author: ]

[Time Published September 28, 2013 at 01:08AM]

[ < - - Content ]
Microsoft released Windows 8 nearly a year ago with the new Windows Store, and the company introduced a limit on the number of systems a single account could install apps on. Today, Microsoft is practically lifting the limit of five machines and changing it to 81 devices. You read that correctly, 81. The massive change appears to be a symbolic link to the upcoming Windows 8.1 update, but it also means that the majority of Windows Store users will no longer have to worry about what PCs they install paid apps to.

"Since we launched Windows 8, we heard growing feedback from many developers and from our most enthusiastic customers that the limit of 5 was not enough for their needs," explains a spokesperson for the Windows apps team. "In...

New data shows entry level Windows Phones doing very well, while the Lumia 1020 remains niche; Nokia near 90% of the Windows Phone market

AdDuplex have released Windows Phone ecosystem data for the month of September. The company powers the ads that are found in Windows Phone apps worldwide and have become a solid metric for platform statistics.

This month’s data continues a few trends, including steady growth of Nokia’s dominance and the rise of low-cost Lumias. However, the high-end market, including the Lumia 1020, have so far not sold nearly as much. Expectation due to niche device or market failure?

Surface 2: a closer look at Microsoft's more refined tablet

[Author: ]

[Time Published September 23, 2013 at 06:04PM]

[ < - - Content ]
Microsoft's new Surface 2 tablet is now official, and it marks more of a refinement over the original than a radical rethinking of the basic Surface concept. The updated model includes Nvidia's Tegra 4 processor, a 1080p display, and a new two-stage kickstand. I got a chance to briefly try out the new tablet, and the first thing I noticed was the weight. Microsoft hasn't trimmed down the Surface 2, but it feels considerably lighter than the original. You'll obviously notice that improvement when you use the Surface 2 in tablet mode, but in the laptop mode the main addition is a two-stage kickstand.

The Surface 2 kickstand answers some of the criticisms of the Surface RT. However, instead of being fully adjustable with separate angles,...

Surface Pro 2: hands-on

Microsoft just unveiled the Surface Pro 2 at an event in New York City. Like its predecessor, it's a 10.1-inch tablet with enough specs that can turn it into a laptop or even a PC replacement. This latest refresh doesn't change much visually, but under the VaporMG casing Microsoft has bumped the specifications to the latest Intel Haswell processor, extended the battery life, and generally improved what was already a fast tablet. The battery life on the Surface Pro 2 is said to be 75 percent better than Surface Pro, while graphical performance is up 50 percent and overall performance is 20 percent better. The Pro 2 will be available in 64GB and 128GB versions with 4GB of RAM, and 256GB and 512GB editions with 8GB of RAM. Microsoft is...
