Weathered old HTC HD2 dresses up like a Nokia X

[~Time Published March 04, 2014 at 06:26PM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

You may remember the HTC HD2 from posts such as “will it play Tekken 3?” and “wait, it runs Windows RT now?” Despite the handset’s age, a stalwart community keeps it relevant by getting anything and everything to run on the developer favorite. It’s only fitting, then, that the HD2 be one of the first to don Nokia’s heavily skinned version of Android, other than the unreleased X family, of course. That’s right: An XDA Developers forum member by the name of gilbert32 has apparently succeeded in porting some form of the Nokia X Android build onto a rather beat-up-looking HD2. We say succeeded, but while it looks the part and plays a booting sound when fired up, “everything else” is admittedly non-functional. Then again, if the goal was to show the HD2 still has legs after all this time, then mission accomplished, sir.

Update to Windows 8.1 coming this spring with more hardware options, benefits for non-touch users

[~Time Published February 23, 2014 at 11:29PM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

We may be at a mobile show this week, but Microsoft is making some announcements on the Windows side. VP Joe Belfiore, at an event this afternoon, has announced that an update is coming to Windows 8.1 this Spring, which will offer more hardware options, benefits for non-touch users and some changes to the user interface. It brings support to devices at lower price points that have as little as 1GB of RAM and 16GB storage, enables app launching and switching via the taskbar and a new mouse user interface with new options for closing apps and right-clicking to get to the Start screen.

Despite the update’s attention on users of non-touch devices, Belfiore exclaimed: “we love touch, but we do want to make things better for people who don’t have touchscreens.” We’ll update the post as we hear more about this new update.

Microsoft rebrands Office Web Apps as Office Online because it’s an online version of Office

[~Time Published February 20, 2014 at 03:46PM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

Use Office Web Apps much? Us neither, which is probably why Microsoft’s answer to Google Docs felt it needed a makeover. Following SkyDrive’s recent rebrand to OneDrive, Office Web Apps has received similar treatment, and now asks you to call it Office Online. Microsoft hopes this new title more accurately reflects what Web Apps was/is: an online version of Word, Powerpoint, Excel and others, free to SkyDrive OneDrive users. Furthermore, Office Online is now located at the convenient URL of Office.com, which should prompt a few more people to stumble across it and add it to their bookmarks. Otherwise, it’s the same Office-in-a-browser experience with real-time co-editing features, just with a heap of new document templates and a dropdown toolbar for selecting different apps on the fly. Now, go get your spreadsheet on — we need those TPS reports by lunch.

Twitter claims Venezuela is blocking its images to stifle protests

[~Time Published February 15, 2014 at 01:26PM]

Venezuelan police shooting at unarmed protesters

Venezuela’s government has been trying to silence protests over shortages of basic goods, and that crackdown appears to be extending into the digital realm as well. A Twitter spokesperson tells Engadget and Bloomberg that pictures on its social network are “currently blocked” for at least some users. The country hasn’t confirmed anything, but President Nicolas Maduro has already taken a TV station off the air after it showed unflattering protest footage (pictured here); this may be just a continuation of his policy. Whatever is taking place, Twitter is encouraging Venezuelans to sign up for text message updates to keep the news flowing. And locals can take comfort in knowing that government attempts to censor online content aren’t always effective at crushing dissent — if there’s enough demand for political change, it can happen.

Europe pushes for a less US-dominated internet

Neelie Kroes of the European Commission

The European Union is more than a little jittery about a US-centric internet after learning the extent of the country’s mass surveillance. Accordingly, the European Commission has proposed a whole host of measures that would shift control to the international community. It wants a firm schedule for globalizing internet infrastructure, more power for the Internet Governance Forum, fewer conflicts between countries’ internet laws and a venue for improving transparency policies. The regulator doesn’t want to give too much clout to any one group, though — Commission VP Neelie Kroes prefers a “multi-stakeholder” approach that lets innovators move at their own pace. The proposal still needs support from both the Council of the EU and the European Parliament before it can take effect, but it could give Europe a united front when it’s pushing for changes in internet policy.

Make ‘business connections’ with Virgin America’s new in-flight social network ;)

[~Time Published February 12, 2014 at 06:28PM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

Haven’t had much luck buying alluring strangers a drink on your last few Virgin America flights? What you need, my friend, is a service to expand your circle of potential prospects and make the in-flight connection you deserve. At least that’s what the airline must be thinking with its announcement of the “first-ever” in-flight social network, developed with Gogo Wifi and the Here on Biz geo-location app.

Once you’ve downloaded Here on Biz from the App Store (sorry, no Android types need apply) and connect through Gogo, the service lets you register via Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter to contact fellow travelers at the gate, on your plane and even on other Virgin America flights. But don’t think the social network is all about helping you get lucky at 35,000 feet (the sexy skies are the furthest thing from Richard Branson’s mind, after all); Virgin America says the service is targeted at business travelers who want to “take advantage of downtime in-flight to build or renew their professional connections.” It’s unclear, though, whether Virgin will claim rights to any startup ideas hatched on board.

Your car’s computer system can be hacked with off-the-shelf parts

[~Time Published February 06, 2014 at 01:08PM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

You probably don’t spend much time thinking about the computer in your car, but a pair of Spanish security researchers sure do. In preparation for next month’s Black Hat Asia security conference in Singapore, Javier Vazquez-Vidal and Alberto Garcia Illera have assembled a small electronic device that can leave a vehicle’s computer system open to attack. “It can take five minutes or less to hook up and then walk away,” Vidal says. It can also be built from off-the-shelf components for less than $20.

What the gizmo can actually do depends on the car. The team says that they’ve wired the CAN Hacking Tool (named for the Controller Area Network bus it exploits) into four vehicles, and have used it to wirelessly manipulate lights, set off alarms, control power windows and even activate the vehicle’s brakes. By the time the conference starts, they hope to outfit the prototype with a GSM radio, making it possible to control vehicle’s systems from virtually anywhere. Still, Vidal says they don’t want to aid any nefarious activities, so the hacking tool’s source code is going to remain private for now — but they do hope their demonstration at Black Hat Asia will get the attention of automakers. “A car is a mini network,” Illera said. “And right now there’s no security implemented.

Battlefield 4 gets even prettier with new AMD drivers

[~Time Published February 04, 2014 at 01:12AM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

Battlefield 4

If you caught our recent coverage of the huge Star Swarm demo, you’ll know that AMD’s Mantle programming tool has already proven itself capable of radically transforming a real-time strategy game. But the console-inspired API has been claimed to deliver performance benefits in FPS games too, starting with Battlefield 4 , and the first independent evidence of this is now starting to trickle out. AnandTech and HotHardware have used almost-final Mantle drivers to achieve frame-rate gains of at least 7-10 percent in BF4, rising to 30 percent with some configurations, by doing away with the need for Microsoft’s relatively inefficient DirectX drivers.

In general, it looks like systems with weaker CPUs stand to benefit the most, because Mantle uses the graphics processor in such a way as to reduce CPU bottlenecks. We’ll get a better idea of the size of the improvement once Mantle is released to the public and tested on a wider variety of systems, including laptops and desktops with low-end or integrated AMD GPUs, but nevertheless, these early results bode well for those who are trying to eke better frame rates out of older, cheaper or smaller gaming rigs.

A first look at Carbon 2.0, a refresh on an awesome Twitter client

[~Time Published January 03, 2014 at 03:01AM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

Carbon for Twitter 1 Carbon for twitter has been in the play store for a while, but hasn’t seen any revolutionary changes in a long time. Till yesterday, that is.

When Carbon first made its way into the Play Store, it was trying to do something different. Be a feature packed app, and have one of the most beautiful dark UIs in the store. I, for one, am a huge fan of the dark UI schemes in apps and ROMs. For me, it was like love at first sight. For a while, that is. After a little bit of using Carbon, the “new app smell” wore off, and I went back to other apps, like the Official Twitter app.

Carbon for Twitter 2

Yesterday, Carbon was updated. And I love it. I don’t think I’m going to be switching away from it for a while. They updated it with what they call “#C2PointOh”, or Carbon 2.0. It truly is worthy of the 2.0 tag, as it is a complete overhaul, in a good way. The new Carbon is elegant in every way, but lacking a few things that I think it really needs. Don’t get me wrong, like I said, I love it. But, there are a few simple things that I think the app should do, that it doesn’t. Well, ok, one. If you have a device with a built in menu button, like me, you get used to hitting that button in any app to bring up the menu, no matter where it’s located. Or, you get used to having some sort of indicator of where the menu would be located. Carbon is not that way. It took me a good 3-4 minutes of searching around the app to figure out where in the world the menu was, and where it was, kinda surprised me. You get to the menu by clicking on your profile picture in the bottom, which is also the button used to compose a new tweet. I would have liked to see these two separated a bit more, or at least have it mapped to the hardware menu button on devices that support it.

Carbon for Twitter 1

Besides that, I love the app. It has good notifications, a good UI, very fast, clean, everything I look for in a Twitter app. Some things that this app does that I really do like is the way it handles multi-touch. If you double tap on a tweet, it brings up a dialog for ReTweeting said tweet, which is an ingenious way to make things faster!

The developers, dots & lines, have this to say about the app:

All-new Carbon v2 with a new design and experience.

Carbon experience for Android Smartphones. No Tablet support yet.

Simple, Dark, and a dash of elegance for your Twitter day-to-day pleasure.

Carbon is a Twitter client, but unlike other Twitter clients. All of your Twitter content on one screen. A screen that doesn’t get you drilling down to many other screens to reach to what you want. Timelines, Lists, Favourites, Searches, Trends, Profiles, all there.

- Fresh new Design & Interface

- Brand new Timeline design & aesthetics

- Swipe-able Timeline, @Mentions, and Messages on Home.

- Quick Timeline, one Timeline for Searches, List, Favourites on your Home screen.

- Don’t Disturb Mode

- Oxide Mode for Grayscale Timeline experience

- Power Scroll: Scroll/Swipe up or down using Two fingers to jump to top or bottom of Timelines

- Tweet Quick Actions

- Configuratie Tweet Font Sizes

- Retweets Timeline

- In-App Browser

- In-App YouTube Player

- Vine Previews & Playback

- Rich Timelines with full inline images and videos

- Rich and elegant style for User Profiles

- Rich Conversation View

- Threaded Direct Messages

- Background updates with quick actions for Jelly Bean, per account

- Username Autocomplete

- Mutes/Filters for Hashtags, Users, and Keywords

- People Search

- Obviously Multi-account with simultaneous accounts tweets

- Profile Editor

Leak shows LG’s radical new interface for its webOS Smart TVs

[~Time Published January 03, 2014 at 02:56AM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

LG’s rumored webOS Smart TV is tipped to arrive at CES in the coming days, but that hasn’t stopped intrepid leaker @evleaks from giving us what could be an early preview of its next connected set. In what appears to be a significant departure from the smartphone-like UI utilized in its current Smart TVs, the leaked render shows off LG’s modern interpretation of the Cards interface we first saw in Palm’s webOS-powered smartphones and tablets. LG chiefs have already indicated that the company has thrown its weight behind the Enyo open-source JavaScript development framework, which it acquired from HP as part of the webOS project, in the hope it will encourage third parties to create apps and services for its next-gen TVs. If the leaked image is real, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Skype apps will likely be available at launch, but we’re set to find out for sure when CES 2014 commences next week.

ASUS user manual confirms VivoTab Note 8 Windows tablet

[~Time Published January 03, 2014 at 02:43AM]

*/*/*/*/*/\*\*\*\*\*

ASUS has just verified that a VivoTab Note 8 slate is imminent after it published the manual on its own site. According to leaks we saw earlier at the FCC and elsewhere, the Windows 8.1 device will be powered by an Intel Atom Z3740 quad-core CPU and have 2GB of RAM, up to 64GB of storage, a 1,280 x 800 touchscreen (which may include Wacom digitizer support), a dedicated stylus, front and rear cameras and a microSD slot. Though the reported specs and $300 price position it closely to the Dell Venue 8 Pro, the VivoTab seems to include the pen, unlike its competitor. All that’s left now is a formal launch with availability and final pricing, which is probably set for a certain little Vegas show.

Samsung’s HomeSync media hub will play nice with non-Samsung Android devices

[Author: ]

[Time Published December 17, 2013 at 03:01PM]

[ < - - Content ]

If ever a product needed to work harder to justify its price tag, it’d be Samsung’s new $299 HomeSync box. Fortunately, the manufacturer seems to be self-aware enough to make some changes: the Android-powered storage, streaming and mirroring hub will soon offer full support for Jelly Bean phones and tablets even if they’re outside of the Galaxy stable. This should allow an average household with numerous, diversely-branded devices to store and share their photos, music and videos using the HomeSync’s 1TB “personal cloud,” while also using their handsets as remote controls and as sources for mirroring via the box’s HDMI input. As things stand, however, only a handful of non-Samsung phones, like the Sony Xperia Z and HTC One, are listed as compatible over at the Google Play store, and it could be a while before the HomeSync becomes truly brand-agnostic. In the meantime, there are plenty of other mobile-friendly NAS solutions around that are worth a look.

$1.2 million in Bitcoins hijacked in ‘social engineering’ attack

Bitcoin hijack highlights the precarious nature of the electronic currency

So, you’ve amassed a fortune in Bitcoins, possibly ill-gotten. If you’re storing them on a computer that’s exposed to the internet, you may want to rethink that strategy thanks to a huge theft from a digital wallet service called Input.io. 4,100 Bitcoins worth $1.2 million were plundered through two separate attacks by a hacker that gained access through social engineering, according to “TradeFortress,” the site’s owner. The thief managed to reset the site’s password through an email recovery scheme, routing the process through a proxy server near the Australian service’s location to avoid suspicion. Unfortunately, Input.io is unable to return the lion’s share of the theft, though TradeFortress told Wired he’d pay back 1,540 Bitcoins from his personal stash. The service is now dead and you may want to heed to rueful owner’s parting words: “I don’t recommend storing any Bitcoins accessible on computers connected to the internet.”

iOximeter is a smartphone heart-rate monitor, powered by the headphone socket

iOximeter is a smart heartrate monitor, powered from a headphone socket

Connecting health-monitoring hardware to smartphones is a no-brainer. The phone does the heavy processing, offers up power and screen, and thus makes the hardware cheaper and more importantly , smaller. However, you still need to power the thing, which can be tough when you’re trying to gauge vitals overnight or longer. Insert Coin competitor iOximeter reckons it’s solved that issue by taking what it needs, power-wise, from your headphone socket. Using a special pulse sensor (that it already owns the intellectual property rights for), iOximeter drops the power requirements down to under 8mA, which means it frees up the typical smartphone battery port (micro-USB or Lightning; it’s iOS- and Android-compatible) to continue charging.

“Because we can add more features through the smartphone app, unlike some relationships, it’s going to get even better over time.”

The sensor we toyed with at Expand was accurate to within 2 BPM at resting heart rates (it gets even better when you’re riled), while it can also count the level of blood oxidation — thus the name. That isn’t where the capabilities stop however, and future development focuses on both respiration rate (intake per minute) and heart-rate deviation, which sounds like a scary metric that would deserve some monitoring. “Because we can add more features through the smartphone app, unlike some relationships it’s going to get even better over time”, said iOximeter’s Yale Zhang, with a sigh. Aside from health business applications, where a cheap long-term monitor could make remote care a whole lot more feasible, the team has already seen interest from, oddly, yoga and meditation groups. These people are apparently looking to log and monitor exactly how relaxed (precisely!) they’re getting during their mantras. No price has been set yet, although the team is promising it’d be an accessible one. We’ll update when we get a price tag.%Gallery-slideshow119586%

Your scanner is stupid. You might not know that, but it is. Thankfully, Expand NY Insert Coin semi-finalist BlinkScan is here to give you what you never knew you needed. It’s a device that scans images, documents or even objects like many other scanners out there, but unlike those dumb machines, BlinkScan tailors its output. Instead of producing a single image with everything lumped together, it crops out the individual items scanned (so that the background is completely eliminated), straightens the resulting images and exports them as separate files to your photo editing software of choice — all in about three seconds. BlinkScan also delivers super-high-quality pictures thanks to its unique image-capture method, which the company calls “perfect color capture.” To get such fidelity, the device takes three separate 10-megapixel monochromatic images (red, blue and green) and combines them into a 36-bit, 30-megapixel image. %Gallery-slideshow119582%

India launches its first Mars spacecraft

India is now well on its way to having an interplanetary presence. The country has successfully launched the Mars Orbiter Mission, a satellite that will search the Martian atmosphere for elusive chemicals like methane. The spacecraft should take about 300 days to reach the Red Planet, but it’s relatively cheap at $72 million; the MOM team is saving money by building up speed in Earth’s orbit. While the mission faces daunting odds when less than half of all Mars missions have been successful, the potential for prestige is high. India’s space agency would be just the fourth to reach the planet — a symbolic win over countries like China, whose efforts have fallen short.

Windows 8.1′s web use doubles shortly after launch

Windows 81 web use doubles in October, steals share from its ancestor

Web traffic doesn’t directly translate to market share, but it’s handy for tracking the adoption of brand new operating systems — take Windows 8.1, for example. Net Applications notes that Microsoft’s new OS nearly doubled in web share upon its official launch in October, climbing to 1.7 percent. Clearly, a lot of web surfers had been waiting to upgrade. As you might imagine, though, the software took share from its predecessor as customers either replaced PCs or downloaded the free update. Windows 8 declined for the first time ever, falling half a point to 7.5 percent; the two 8.x revisions gained 0.4 points when put together, but Windows as a whole dipped slightly to 90.7 percent.

Redmond wasn’t the only one releasing a new platform, of course. Apple’s OS X Mavericks accounted for more than 0.8 percent of web traffic last month, or enough to put it past Tiger and Leopard almost overnight. While the overall Mac platform only grew by a tiny amount to hit 7.7 percent of web use, we doubt that the crew at 1 Infinite Loop is complaining. It’s not clear how the dueling Apple and Microsoft upgrades will compare in the long run, but you can check the historical trends both after the break and at the source link.
