The journey is over for China's moon rover. China's state news agency is reporting today that the country's space agency has not been able to restore function to the Jade Rabbit rover, which suffered a mechanical malfunction late last month. The rover initially malfunctioned as it was preparing for the two-week lunar night, a period where it would be exposed to extreme cold temperatures and be unable to receive solar power. It likely failed to enter its hibernation mode, exposing critical components to environmental hazards for the past two weeks.

Een prominente Chinese partijleider heeft ingrijpende economische en sociale hervormingen beloofd. Volgens Yu Zhengsheng, de vierde man van het dagelijks bestuur van de Communistische Partij, zal de partijtop tijdens de volgende bijeenkomst 'verregaande hervormingen onderzoeken'.

"De hervormingen zullen dit keer in de breedte zijn, veel kracht hebben en ongeëvenaard zijn", zegt Yu.

Yu is de eerste leider die zich in het openbaar uitlaat over de langverwachte hervormingen. Volgende maand komt de nieuwe partijtop voor de derde keer sinds de leiderschapswisseling in november vorig jaar bij elkaar. Dat is voor de communistische leiders vaker het moment geweest om hervormingen aan te kondigen.

Speculaties

Over concrete maatregelen is nog niets bekend, maar in de staatsmedia wordt er al maanden over gespeculeerd. Verwacht wordt dat het midden- en kleinbedrijf meer speelruimte krijgt in de vorm van belastingverlagingen. Met name private ondernemers profiteren daarvan. De grote staatsbedrijven zouden daarentegen macht en invloed moeten inleveren.

Op financieel gebied wil China experimenteren met een vrije munt, buitenlandse investeringen en kapitaaltoevoer in speciaal daarvoor ingerichte economische zones. De tweede economie ter wereld groeit de afgelopen maanden minder snel en het is nog niet zeker of die daling al gestopt is. De hervormingen moeten daar veranderingen in brengen.

Sociale hervormingen

Ook sociaal komen er volgens Yu hervormingen aan. De gevolgen van de massale trek van het platteland naar de stad hebben ervoor gezorgd dat er in de Chinese megasteden tweederangsburgers wonen, omdat mensen van het platteland in de stad geen recht hebben op onderwijs, gezondheidszorg of sociale voorzieningen. Mogelijk gaat dat veranderen.

De derde bijeenkomst van de 200 leden van het Centraal Comité van de Communistische Partij vindt waarschijnlijk begin november plaats. Alles is achter gesloten deuren.

Google-Backed File-Sharing Service Spreads Malware

To the Western public the name Xunlei might not ring any immediate bells, but in China its software is used by hundreds of millions of people every month.

Previously the company’s BitTorrent client was crowned the most used BitTorrent software in the world, beating uTorrent and several other popular clients.

Xunlei’s website offers a searchable index of billions of media files which users can download with the proprietary Xunlei software. The company is partly owned by Google and in recent years has evolved into the leading player in the online file-sharing space.

Recently, however, the company ran into trouble when people spotted suspicious software on their systems signed with a Xunlei security certificate. A thorough investigation from ESET now reveals that Xunlei the company has been spreading malware to Windows and Android users.

While it’s unclear how the application is distributed, the windows installer “INPEnhSetup.exe” that spreads the suspicious files is directly connected to the Chinese file-sharing giant. Besides the security certificate, the application also calls home to the Xunlei-owned domain kankan.com

Once the “dropper” is installed it loads an Office plugin which among other things downloads an Android application. This application is then installed on all Android devices that are connected to the computer, which subsequently installs several other seemingly harmless applications.

ESET looked at all the technical details of the software distributed by Xunlei and has categorized the application as a malicious program under the name Win32/Kankan.

“The use of a fake Office plugin to gain persistence, the ability to silently install Android applications, and the backdoor functionalities, confirm the validity of the concerns of Chinese users and explains why ESET detects this program as malicious, under the name Win32/Kankan,” ESET’s Joan Calvet writes.

“There are still some open questions, like the original infection vector and the exact reason the Android applications were installed,” he adds.

While it remains unclear whether Xunlei’s popular BitTorrent client was used to spread the malware, the company has admitted that its employees were responsible for the development and distribution of the suspicious software.

During a press conference Xunlei apologized for their mistakes. The company said that the personnel responsible were acting without permission and have since been fired.

For affected users Xunlei has released an uninstaller and according to ESET the number of infections has dropped significantly since its release, as can be seen in the graph below.

China worstelt met nieuw vliegtuig

De pogingen van China om een luchtvaartindustrie op te bouwen hebben opnieuw vertraging opgelopen. De oplevering van het eerste commerciële Chinese verkeersvliegtuig, de Comac ARJ21, wordt nu niet eerder dan midden volgend jaar verwacht. Eerder werd uitgegaan van eind dit jaar.

Het project had al eerder met vertraging te kampen. De ontwikkeling van de ARJ21 begon in 2002. Het vliegtuig had in 2007 moeten vliegen, maar dat werd keer op keer uitgesteld. De topman van Comac zegt nu in een toelichting dat het ontwikkelen van een nieuw toestel "niet altijd soepel" verloopt. "Het programma kan niet in een klap worden voltooid."

De ARJ21 is een relatief klein vliegtuig, dat negentig stoelen krijgt. Het wordt gezien als de opmaat voor een groter toestel van Comac, de C919. Dat toestel moet op termijn de concurrentie aangaan met de Boeing 737 en de Airbus A320, zo hopen de Chinezen.
